Founded in 2001 by Julian Burnside QC, it offered a support network of over 250 lawyers including barristers, solicitors and law students, who donated their time and expertise to assist asylum seekers in Australia. Fundamental to Spare Lawyers for Refugees is a belief in the rule of law. Spare Lawyers for Refugees drew upon the strong culture of pro bono legal assistance within the Australian legal community.
